NEWS ACQUISITIONS, MERGERS & AGREEMENTS Sybase Acquires NEON to Drive e-Business Strategy Sybase has signed an agreement to acquire New Era of Networks, Inc. (NEON), an e-business application company, in a move to accelerate its e-Business strategy.The stock-for-stock deal is valued at approximately $373-million. Upon the completion of the deal, expected in the second quarter of 2001, Sybase intends to establish a new e-Business Division integrating NEON and elements of its product lines and offerings with Sybase’s flagship Enterprise Portal solution. The new division will focus on combining the companies expertise in enterprise portals, Internet applications and enterprise integration to offer enterprises a comprehensive solution, said the company. In a related announcement, Sybase said that it has expanded and enhanced its flagship Enterprise Portal. The California-based company has introduced Sybase® Enterprise Portal 2.0, integrating new mobile and wireless technologies, B2B application integration, and extensible e-business foundation. For the mobile worker the latest version of EP offers them mobile Internet browsing; messaging services including bi-directional mobile messaging capabilities; and always-available access to corporate data and applications. Sybase EP 2.0 addresses the increasing demand of trading partners to exchange data between their respective enterprises that more than likely is not compatible. EP 2.0 uses XML to allow independent applications to communicate with each other over the Internet. Content management features enables enterprises to add, categorize, and deploy personalized information to end users.
