Literary Character Goes Mobile

The British author of the best-selling ‘Bridget Jones Diary’ and its sequel, ‘Edge of Reason,’ Helen Fielding has joined forces with wireless entertainment firm Riot Entertainment to develop original content based on her Bridget Jones character.

With the release of the feature film ‘Bridget Jones Diary’ this spring, Riot will offer Bridget’s trademark chatty advice to predominately 20 and 30 something female mobile subscribers in the U.S. Mobile users will be able to access daily diary updates, personality tests, Ask Bridget for Bridget Jones’ Guide to life and discussions on such topics as dieting and self-help advice.

Commenting on the benefits of the mobile medium, Riot Entertainment’s CEO Jan Wellmann, said, "Mobile phones are a perfect way to add another dimension to book characters such as Bridget. Mobile is flexible, dynamic and has an immediacy, which is not possible with any other medium. Bridget can text others everyday to report" on any number of things.

In time this generation of mobile users will probably hear from their favorite fictional characters more often than from their own friends, commented Fielding on the popularity of text messaging.

To coincide with the movie release, the wireless entertainment company will be making services such as new games available to the European 20 something market.

The Bridget Jones deal comes after Riot Entertainment’s successful track record with Marvel Entertainment Inc. Since August 2000, the entertainment firm has been developing mobile entertainment and community content for Marvel’s 4,700 characters, including services such as the X-Men game offered in Italy, Finland, Philippines, and Japan, which has generated millions of mobile text messages and still continues to attract new players.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: We saw the movie and liked it. Having said that, what we find interesting is that wireless may take off among young active consumers because of unconventional entertainment applications. We will be watching.
