Cingular Wireless Selects Qpass Commerce Solution for New Micropayment Service

Cingular DirectBill, powered by the Qpass Commerce Service, enables Cingular subscribers to purchase low-cost digital goods charged directly to wireless phone bill

Seattle, June 4, 2001 - Qpass, a premier provider of commerce service infrastructure, today announced that Cingular Wireless, the nation's second-largest wireless carrier, is using the Qpass Commerce Service for its new micropayment service, Cingular DirectBill.

Cingular DirectBill, launched today at SuperComm in Atlanta, is a unique service that enables subscribers to buy low-cost digital goods on the Internet, and pay for these purchases as part of their monthly mobile phone bill. Using Qpass' commerce infrastructure, Cingular becomes the first wireless carrier in the United States to offer a wireless micropayment solution to its subscribers.

A wide variety of downloadable ringtones, including tunes from "Pretty Woman," "Batman" and Jennifer Lopez, are the first products available through Cingular DirectBill for 99 cents each.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: A number of new ways of mobile-commerce micropayment must emerge, especially for those low-cost electronic purchases. This means that cost of billing services must be extremely low. We think that QPass and Cingular can do it more economically than banks because they are used to dealing with billing of individual cellular calls that are in this price range. However, one difference is that the processing of future m-commerce transactions will be quite complex. They must deal with and settle with content providers - much different than traditional telephone billing from an information tape captured off a switch.
