Vodafone UK, Has Launched GPRS

Vodafone UK, the largest British mobile network operator, has launched GPRS for consumers.  Personal customers will be able to purchase Motorola Timeport T260 handsets with a monthly subscription to the Vodafone network.  The T260 features an IR port, WAP browser and GPRS connectivity.  Vodafone claims the GPRS network will offer significantly faster access to WAP services, including the ability to send and receive voice calls during a WAP session and maintain a permanant data connection throughout the day without incurring air time charges.  Vodafone is pricing the T260 handset at £99.99, roughly half the amount charged by rival BT Cellnet for the same product, and plans to make further GPRS devices, including smartphones, available shortly.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: It is good to see GPRS service emerge in UK and then lead the way for 2.5G networks elsewhere in Europe.
