Airify Out to Unite A Fragmented Mobile Environment

While other industry players hail allegiance to one or two industry standards or promote a proprietary protocol, an up-and-coming company Airify Communications' mission is to bring harmony to a fragmented mobile environment.

The Mountain View, Calif., company has developed a single-chip solution that promises mobile device users seamless connectivity, everywhere, all the time. Based on the company's universal platform utilizing patent core technologies, the chip can maintain synchronous connections and implement smart, on-the-fly protocol transfers between wireless LAN protocols (Bluetooth, 802.11b) and cellular interface protocols (supporting GSM, GPRS, and EDGE), the company says.

The microprocessor will allow users to download software upgrades through its small programmable logic core. Thus mobile workers could use a wireless LAN to browse in the office, a PDA to check traffic conditions, or a cellphone to download video games.

The Airify solution combines a highly efficient vector processor array coupled with inexpensive flow controllers and a large code and data memory implemented in the direct access Flash. The ability to work with multiple standards rests on a configurable system bus as well as a flexible architectural implementation that allows software algorithms to be run at real-time speeds. The company says future versions of the chips will include WCDMA support and a proprietary and mixed-signal interface, which will dramatically lower the cost of the solution.

With more than a dozen patents pending and an average of three new applications filed each month, Airify Communications has attracted the attention of industry players such as TSMC, Virtual IP, Leda Systems, and ISSC.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: This is an important area where we do need a silicon solution to unify wireless LANs and wide area wireless networks. There are still challenges in this area especially in building multiple radios and antennas that can pick signals from different air links. We know that a Waterloo, Ontario company is trying to address a similar requirement. MobileInfo.Com strongly believes in hybrid network approach - wireless LAN at higher speed in hot spots and lower speed wireless wide area network when you are mobile. Therefore, we applaud and encourage Airify and others to pursue this space.
