MSC Networks and Agere Systems Turn Shopping Centers into
Wireless LAN Hotspots
MSC Networks, formerly
MyShoppingCenter.com, turned to Agere Systems, known for its ORiNOCO
wireless networking products, to offer wireless high-speed
Internet access to merchants in its shopping complexes.
Agere Systems installed Wi-Fi compliant networks in shopping
complexes of at least 3,000 square feet to provide merchants and
their customers access to the Internet. From their store locations,
merchants can also access applications, including remote store
monitoring, which uses wireless cameras and devices to track the
number of customers.
Commenting on the performance of Agere’s solution, IIan Zarchar,
chief technology officer for MSC Networks, said, "Since the
signal strength remains strong and consistent in a variety of
environmental conditions, we are able to guarantee service levels
and provide mission critical applications to our merchant customers
with the utmost confidence that our coverage is strong and reliable
in all of our shopping centers."
Components of the Wireless LAN Solution
- ORiNOCO AP-500 Access Points provide 128-bit data encryption
and include a built-in Wi-Fi compliant radio
- External Range Antenna maximizes coverage for the AP-500 and
its integrated radio
- COR-1100 Central Outdoor Routers and ROR-1000 Remote Outdoor
Routers provide indoor and outdoor wireless connectivity at a
range of up to 10 miles
- ORiNOCO PC cards inserted into desktop and laptop computers
provide the wireless connection to access points and outdoor
routers positioned throughout the shopping center networks
In addition, MSC Networks has signed contracts with several
publicly traded Real-Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) to install
broadband infrastructure in their shopping centers and to provide
retail applications and e-business services to their tenants.
