Proxim, Inc. has acquired
wireless LAN vendor Card Access, Inc., of American Fork, Utah, in a
move to expand its enterprise wireless networking solutions.
Card Access’ extensive background in the mobile communications
arena, including Springbroad, PC Card, and Mini PCI, will enable
Proxim not only to expand its enterprise solutions, but also to
accelerate the development of its next-generation, high-speed
wireless networking solutions.
Commenting on the deal, David King, Proxim’s chairman,
president and CEO, said, "Card Access brings additional strong
802.11a technical expertise to Proxim's current development
efforts."
With the success of its wireless broadband networking product
lines, such as the Harmony, the Stratum, and the Farallon, Proxim
now has its sights on incorporating technology that will enable
networking speeds up to 100 Mbps versus the current snail pace of
11Mbps; ideal for accessing streaming video and other multimedia
content, transferring large files, and supporting high-density
environments, the company said.
"We believe Card Access’ products and people will
strengthen Proxim’s existing wireless broadband networking
capabilities and further Proxim’s anticipated roll out of its
802.11a solutions that will help users break the speed barrier for
wireless networking," Mr. King said.
The stock transaction is valued at $4-million. Proxim will
integrate Card Access’ personnel into its development, sales, and
marketing units.
