Broadcom Makes Bluetooth Affordable

Broadcom Corporation said its Broadcom BCM2002 radio chip with Bluetooth capabilities for CDMA and 3G phones is now available for OEMs for less than $5 apiece.

The BCM2002 meets the qualifications of Bluetooth Qualification Board versions 1.1 — qualified system solutions for Bluetooth applications, according to the company.

"Qualification of the BCM2002 means mobile phone manufacturers will finally be able to add Bluetooth functionality to their handsets for less than $5, a long-awaited price point in the industry," said Scott Bibaud, director of marketing for Broadcom’s Bluetooth products.

Key Features of the BCM2002

  • Strong spurious emission performance: The radio chip minimizes interference with transmissions taking place in the bands used by mobile phones.
  • Blocking Performance: Its highly linear design eliminates RF filtering to receive strong, reliable signals from other Bluetooth devices.
  • Optimized cell phone integration: The radio design eases integration into the very harsh environment within cell phones while optimizing overall performance.
  • Fractional-N frequency generation technology: The technology enables the chip to base its operation on a number of different reference frequencies.

OEMs will have to place large orders of hundreds of thousands in order to receive the $5 price, the company said.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: We would like to applaud Broadcom to bring the cost of Bluetooth chipset to $5.00 range. While current economic climate has a lot to do this price point, Broadcom's action will put enough pressure on other manufacturers to bring prices in line with announcements at the time of  much-hyped Bluetooth introduction, 12-18 months ago.
