NTT DoCoMo’s 3G Network Under the Microscope of a Construction Company

NTT DoCoMo announced that Takenaka, one of Japan’s largest construction companies, has commenced testing its FOMA 3G mobile service. On October 1st, the same day that DoCoMo launched its commercial 3G service, Takenaka began testing the service as the core component of its new mobile business solution. The trial will run until the end of March 2002.

Mobile workers at its Tokyo headquarters are using and assessing the advanced features of the FOMA handsets such as video screens and built-in cameras to perform the following:

  • View streamed video content such as product promotions and instructions on operating equipment.
  • Take and send still pictures and transmit them to a server. The pictures will be stored in a database and viewed with FOMA handsets equipped with video screens. Content will include reports from manufacturing sites as well as daily updates of work in progress.
  • Real-time video monitoring for such applications as facility security, work process and weather conditions.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: We like this vertical industry application because it does validate the "raison-d'etre" of i-Mode, 3G and FOMA. This does raise the "state-of-art" , so to speak, of  wireless applications deployment in the enterprise, so long as the price is right.. When you get a picture of the construction site showing daily progress of a project, it adds value to a text-written, computer-generated report. We find this progress.
