Associated Food Stores Deploys
WhereNet’s Solution at Distribution Center
WhereNet has announced that
Associated Food Stores, headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, has
deployed its Real-Time Locating System (RTLS) technology to reduce
costs and improve efficiencies at its 600-acre distribution center.
"WhereNet’s technology allows us to track, locate and
monitor transportation assets and the contents of every load of
lettuce, Popsicles, and chicken in real time," said Tim Van de
Merwe, internal logistics manager for AFS. "By leveraging this
breakthrough technology, WhereNet enables AFS to provide our member
stores, nearly 600, with on-time service and fresher food than ever
before."
The WhereNet system provides real-time location and telemetry
information for each of the several hundred trailers and associated
equipment AFS employs. AFS has leveraged WhereNet’s Software
Development to automatically provide real-time location information
to existing AFS Yard Management System. The system pinpoints the
location of resources within 10 feet thus enabling AFS to improve
the movement of trailer and products through its distribution
center.
Components of the RTLS
- WhereTags, wireless radio frequency tags
- A local infrastructure of antennas
- Location processors
- Wireless LAN
- Barcode data-capture products
WhereTags are permanently mounted on all AFS-owned trailers,
tractors, and dollies, enabling the WhereNet system to track the
tagged assets from the moment they enter the yard, the company said.
"We expect AFS to enjoy significant return on investment
through the benefits associated with the real-time location of
critical yard resources in its new square-mile facility,"
remarked Tom Turner, senior vice president for WhereNet.
"Spoiled cargo, late shipments, peak season trailer leases, and
demurrage disputes are no longer issues for AFS."
