Two Automotive Giants to Develop
Telematics Services for Japanese Market
General Motors Corp. and Toyota Motor
Corp. said they will join forces to develop telematics services for
the Japanese market. They are considering signing an eight-month
agreement to explore opportunities for advanced in-vehicle and
entertainment systems in Japan. The two companies will consider
leveraging their own in-vehicle services: GM’s OnStar telematics
service in North America and Toyota’s G-book, vehicle information
network service in Japan.
The two companies are considering the following:
- Standardizing telecommunication technology and services
- Toyota’s supplying GM with Toyota-developed digital maps on
a fee basis
- GM offering its services on Toyota’s stand-alone terminals
located at convenience stores
Obviously, it makes more sense for GM to work with Toyota than
trying to develop its own service in a market it is unfamiliar with.

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: Toyota
will gain more from this than GM who has moved much further with its
telematics initiatives. However, Toyota knows Japan well and could
offer GM something in return.
