IBM Unveils New Security Services and Software
IBM said it plans to
deliver new security services, software, and hardware that will make
it easier to secure wireless corporate data.
According to Mike Bilger, global practice leader for IBM Security
and Privacy Services, the company is responding to customer demand
for an end-to-end package that allows them to extend security
policies from wired networks to wireless networks.
The New Security package
- Wireless-network auditing tool
- Wireless updates to IBM’s Tivoli Risk Manager and Tivoli
Policy Director software
- Cryptographic microprocessor chip that supports public key
infrastructure encryption and digital signatures
IBM’s security services will appeal to the organization with a
private wireless network, said Mr. Bilger, including banks,
hospitals and wireless carriers.
In addition, the company is offering risk-assessment and
service-design capabilities using the Wireless Security Auditor,
which is designed to enable security consultants and system
administrators to find access points and examine configurations to
secure wireless networks.

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: There
is less to IBM's service offering than what appears on the surface.
Wireless network security auditing tool is good that will help IBM
sell its consulting service more than anything else. Similarly updates
to Tivoli Risk Manager is a necessary enhancement to an enterprise
systems manager that claims to lead the market. Only the last item - a
cryptographic chip, is a serious contribution. What we would like to
see from IBM is a comprehensive end-to-end security solution spanning
multiple wireless gateways and protocols across its WebSphere platform
and other platforms. Our kudos must await such an effort from
IBM Having said that, we must emphasize that IBM does have a
strong systems integration capability to build a custom wireless
security solution for a customer who has the bucks.
