PocketPC Attracting the Attention of the Corporate Sector, survey says

With the handset market feeling the ill affects of the global economic slump, the pressure is on Palm and Microsoft — the two platform rivals –– to convince tight corporate spenders that its platform will rein supreme.

According to IDC’s mobile enterprise survey, Microsoft’s PocketPC is clearly threatening Palm’s market position. Approximately 36 percent of the respondent companies are ‘planning on’ or ‘considering’ PocketPC compared to only 20.9 percent ‘planning on’ or ‘considering’ Palm.

Participating companies were those with at least 500 handheld devices in use.

"Despite economic uncertainty and tight IT budgets, companies are now seriously evaluating their handheld options," said Travis Glasson, analyst with IDC. "Palm has become a household name because of its skill in meeting the needs of individual users, but in the enterprise it’s going to face formidable competition from Microsoft’s PocketPC platform and partners."

"The recent debut of PocketPC 2002 with critical features, such as VPN support and a terminal server client, positions PocketPC-based handhelds as powerful tools within the enterprise," said IDC analyst Randy Giusto.

Key Findings

  • PocketPC is expected to appeal to companies using large numbers of devices
  • Competition among hardware and platform vendors will intensify
  • Value-added resellers and systems integrators are currently key channels, but buyers want to move to direct purchasing

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: We said so earlier in our news flash #37. Therefore, we agree with IDC's findings. Palm better watch out! Competition to PocketPC 2002 will come not from Palm but from J2ME, Smart Phones, Linux and application-specific devices but Microsoft will continue to gain foothold.
