India’s Jataayu First to Unveil WAP 2.0 Software
Jataayu Software, based in
Bangalore, India, claims to be the first company to develop a WAP
software gateway that enables mobile users to access multimedia
content from the wireless Web.
The company said its new gateway is based on the WAP 2.0
specifications released by the WAP Forum in August, 2001
"WAP 2.0 is a significant improvement over its predecessor
of WAP 1.2 and is expected to firmly establish the mobile Internet
industry created by the WAP 1.x specification," said CEO Mahesh
Jain. "WAP 2.0 standard heralds the use of multimedia content
over mobile networks, direct access to HTTP sites and complete
end-to-end security among others."
The new software will appeal to operators, software companies and
instrument providers that are looking to upgrade their current
version of WAP.
"WAP 2.0 will change the user’s perception of the mobile
Internet with its significantly improved user experience,"
commented Dr. Gopalakrishna, Director and Advisor to Jataayu.
"The convergence of WAP 2.0 with Web technologies will pave the
way for rapid development of new mobile services. The associated
technologies such as SyncML will fuel the exploration of data access
over mobile Intent. "
According to Reuters, Jain told a news conference that WAP
2.0-enabled handsets could be available during the second quarter of
next year.

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: While
WAP may never regain the hype it built in 1999-2000, this browser will
help WAP to add some luster to its dulled image.
