Apple, Ericsson and Sun to Create
a Standard Format for Streaming Media
Apple Computer Inc., Sun
Microsystems Inc. and Ericsson have joined forces to create a
standard format for next-generation Internet streaming media.
The joint effort will enable network operators to deliver
standardized multimedia content to a variety of wireless devices,
including mobile phones and PDAs.
"The Content Delivery Solution will open up new revenue
streams for operators by providing users with high quality
multimedia services, such as movie clips and instant news on
demand," said Torbjörn Nilsson, senior vice president,
Ericsson Marketing and Strategic Business Development.
This cooperative effort will bridge the media industry with the
mobile community, Nilsson added.
The MPEG-4 based content delivery solution will expand the market
for streaming media, opening new distribution channels for content
providers.
The standard-based solution will include the following:
- Apple’s QuickTime for content creation and encoding
- Sun’s reliable and scalable software and systems to enable
content distribution
- Ericsson’s infrastructure and services solution for carriers

Mobileinfo Comments & Advisory: Apple
has always been ahead in imaging and multi-media applications.
Therefore, we like them giving a lead in this area. You can bet,
Microsoft-centric world would catch on and benefit.
