American Hospital Trades
Clipboards for Palm Handhelds
Healthcare professionals at
The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, N.C., have traded
in their paper-based clipboards, laden with moans of paper dotted
with out-dated information, for Palm handheld devices equipped with
infrared ports.
The handhelds run on an enterprise system that combines MercuryMD’s
Staging Database and client software with Extended Systems’
XTNDConnect Server.
At several dozen infrared beaming stations located throughout the
hospital, physicians equipped with Palm handhelds can
- Access patient records,
- Download treatment plans,
- Check test results and
- Prescribe treatment to patients.
By implementing the handheld system, physicians can save anywhere
from 30 to 90 minutes each day.
"The handheld system saves me about five hours a week,"
said Dr. David Simonds, a physician at The Moses H. Cone Memorial
Hospital. "By using the Palm handheld and eliminating a lot of
paperwork, I can spend more time with my patients, which is a key
priority for any doctor."
