KDDI Announces a New GPS Service for Mobile Phones
This fall Japanese mobile carrier KDDI Corp. will launch a new
location information management service, called GPS MAP, that will
allow enterprises to track remote workers and vehicles with
compatible handsets in real time.
The new service will leverage the telecom’s third generation
network, CDMA2000 1x GPS KEITAI, which uses Global Positioning
System satellites and wireless routing stations to provide users
with location information accurate to within meters.
According to the company, the service has many potential
applications in areas as diverse as goods delivery and collection,
sales, maintenance, healthcare, security and event management.
Using a GPS KEITAI, one of KDDI’s 3G-compatible handsets,
remote workers can send and receive messages on the status of their
work to supervisors monitoring Web-enabled PCs, thereby improving
operational efficiency.
Key Features of KDDI’s GPS MAP Service
- A remote worker can select one of a number of settings on his
mobile phone to notify PC centers of his status, for example,
‘in transit‘ or ‘in discussion with customer.’
- The maps displayed on GPS-enabled handsets are available in
six different scales, while those on PCs incorporated into the
GPS MAP system are available in four different scales.
- The service screens track the movement of commercial vehicles,
such as those involved in route sales, on maps displayed at
centers.
